This is the third time London has organised the Olympics (1908,1948 and 2012).

the1908 games took place over six month and there was no Olympic flame -it was only introduced to the modern games in Amsterdam in 1928.there were no Olympics during the second world war. London was bombed during the war, and food and many other basic products were still rationed in 1948.When London accepted to organise the Games, it was originally suggested that foreign teams could sleep in the ex-prisoner of war camps!.There were 59 countries participating as opposed to 22 in 1908 and 204 today. ManyOlympians, particularly for star events like sprinting and swimming, receive sufficient money to do their sport full time. But the athletes who aren't certain to get an Olympic place have difficulty getting financing. In 2011, British sprinter James Ellington decided to sell himself on eBay! to be the Olympic team.
